CalmDollar vs YNAB

YNAB made zero-based budgeting popular, and it's excellent at it. CalmDollar uses the same method with a free plan, a lower price, and a habit layer built in. If you're in Canada, a few differences matter more than usual, so they're called out below.

Where YNAB is ahead

  • Bank sync. YNAB can import transactions directly from many banks, including some Canadian ones. CalmDollar doesn't have bank sync yet, so you log transactions by hand or import a CSV.
  • Native mobile apps. YNAB has iOS and Android apps. CalmDollar is a web app that works in mobile browsers.
  • A big teaching library. Years of workshops, guides, and a large community. If you want to learn the method with lots of company, that counts for a lot.

Where CalmDollar is ahead

  • A free plan that stays free. The whole zero-based method for one person, with 40 categories and 2 goals, and no trial clock.
  • Price. Plus is $5.99 a month or $59 a year. Pro covers up to six people for $8.99. YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year, billed in US dollars.
  • Roles for a real household. Pro gives each member an owner, adult, or limited role, so teens can log their own spending without moving money around.
  • The habit layer. Streaks, XP, and badges reward the small act of logging, which is where most budgets quietly fall apart.

Same method, calmer price

If you already think in YNAB's terms, you'll feel at home: income comes in, every dollar gets a job, and the to-assign number goes to zero. Export your transactions from YNAB as a CSV and bring your history with you. Want to try the method on your own numbers first? Start with a budget template for your city.
